Methane gas causes explosions in Detroit
May 6, 2003

Several strong explosions rocked Detroit on May 6, 2003, when an underground fire blew two manhole covers into the air and shattered windows. DTE Energy told a local TV station that the explosions may have been caused by a methane leak from an old sewer line. A spark may have ignited the gas and started fires in underground lines beneath the street at Shelby and Lafayette. The first blast blew two manhole covers off, shattered the eardrum of a firefighter parked nearby, and broke windows. 3 more explosions rocked the area before DTE cut the power to burn the fire out.
